It's nearly your kids birthday and you have no idea what cake to make for school! You can't choose between chocolate or vanilla or something way out there and then there is the decoration! Should you just go and buy a cake??? One things is for sure. Once you finish this article you are sure to come out with some good ideas and a little more clarity!

School Requirements
There is of course the school requirements to take into account. Do they only accept white cake to avoid mess or even only cupcakes for the same reason? Are there any allergies in the class to consider? How many to serve? Is the cake big enough to serve all the children a slice? Once you know these answers you have a place to start.
Flavour: Plain but Classic or Different but out there...
To cater to most peoples tastes you can't go too wrong with classic vanilla or chocolate. Think not too much cream for kids as they find it sickening. You may want to go with a thin layer of jam to stick the layers together or go with a deeper cake to begin with.
Your kid may love a specific flavour and insist that they want it. It's your choice. It's their cake but then again if no one else in the class eats matcha tea filled with cardamom cream and mango jelly your kid also won't be happy. They love when people enjoy the cake and it gets eaten! So take that into consideration. Ideas such as lemon and meringue, orange and chocolate and sometimes coffee can go down well.
Decoration
Oh this wonderful question... How decorated do you want to make this cake? Will a 3 tier castle cake or a 3D flying dragon be appropriate? Perhaps there are 2 cakes. A school cake and a home party cake. If yes, you may want to save the extravagant design for home. A lot of the 3D designs come with inedible internal supports that are hard to remove in school. They are also generally considered inappropriate for school being too ostentatious.
If a castle cake is your kids dream, try an edible image or a 1 tier cake with turrets made from ice cream cones and covered in icing so they are lightweight and need no supports.
Maybe a 3D modelled dragon on top of a regular round cake is an idea to replace the full blown 3D cake design.
You may be surprised that your child wants a plain design. One of my boys just loves a sprinkle cake with swirls of cream on the top. He dreams about it all year.

Made with love
Do you want to make the cake yourself or buy it?
Personally, I think there is nothing like a cake made by 'Mummy'. Even though you may think I encourage people to buy from sellers like me, I actually do the opposite.
Purchasing cakes should be a special occasion thing saved for a Bar Mitzvah, Wedding or big Anniversary.
If you aren't really a baker then there are cake mix boxes out there that work!
Even a cake made in a tinfoil dish and piped on with melted chocolate and sprinkles is going to mean more to your child.
Cupcakes are a great option too!
They are easy to make and decorate. Watch out for my swirl classes for an easy go to incredible decoration. You can even top the cakes with a hand drawn or printed sign stuck onto a toothpick.
To conclude, whether you are choosing to make or buy the cake, once you have considered the flavours, allergies or school requirements and decoration you are nearly there. Are you more clear yet? :)
