Inviting guests for Shabbos is a wonderful opportunity to create memories, strengthen community ties and bring warmth into your home.
We host very often, - family members, Sem girls, Yeshiva bochorim and friends. However, balancing this with running a home-based business can feel quite overwhelming.
You could either wing it and hope for the best. (This often applies to me ;) !)
Or try plan as best you can.
With the right approach, you can successfully manage both commitments. Here’s some ideas on how to blend hosting with business smoothly.
Plan Ahead
Preparation is key when it comes to hosting guests and managing a business. Create a detailed list of tasks before Shabbos, which should include meal planning, cleaning, and setting up your space.
For example, consider making a chicken dish or dessert two days in advance or baking challa in bulk for the next few weeks. This allows you to focus on your business during the days coming up to Shabbos without being too overwhelmed.
Allocate specific time slots in your calendar for Shabbos preparations. Even dedicating just 30 minutes each day can make a significant difference.
I have a suggested plan at the end of this post.
Create a Welcoming Motto
The atmosphere can greatly impact your guests’ experience. Even if you’re busy working from home, you can make your environment inviting. Make your home a welcoming one with a motto for staying calm even when things are overwhelming.
Have a decor system that stays the same each week for example, pillows go on couch like so and dishes go on table like so.
Invest in a fresh bouquet of flowers (husband / loved one purchasing this for you is a bonus) or seasonal decorations to enhance your table setting. Abundant studies show that a pleasant atmosphere improves social interactions — aim for an aesthetic that promotes warmth and welcome.
Our home has purple touches to it to bring in warmth. I was never a cream couch kind of girl.
Delegate Responsibilities
Involving family members is a great way to lighten your load. Assign specific tasks based on strengths. For instance, if someone enjoys cooking, let them handle the food prep while another family member sets the table or changes the hand towels.
Guests can also pitch in. If they arrive early, don’t hesitate to encourage them to help.
(Ok I really am not so good at this!)
This not only lightens your responsibilities but fosters a sense of community and shared experience. They will feel more at home!
I let them chat with the kids, hold the baby, Lay out the napkins.
Time Management is Key
Effective time management is vital when balancing a home business and hosting. Start by assessing how much time you have each day for work tasks and Shabbos preparations. Prioritize tasks by creating a to-do list.
It's helpful to keep to a schedule that works for you! For example, always shopping on a Wednesday.
Look up ways to manage your time wisely.
Ver importantly -
A short nap will help you to avoid procrastinating and make you more productive.
Find Balance
Striving for balance is essential. Dedicate time each week to recharge, whether through reading, time with friends, or light exercise. When you take care of yourself, you’ll be more present for your family and guests when Shabbos comes.
Remember to celebrate the feeling of connection during these gatherings. You don’t have to aim for perfection. The goal is to foster joy and giving.

Embrace the Journey
Successfully hosting guests for Shabbos while running a home business is attainable with thoughtful planning and organization. By following the strategies outlined, you can create a meaningful experience for both your guests and your family.
Take joy in the beauty of Shabbos while also nurturing your business. A little bit of foresight can lead to a fulfilling and harmonious weekend for everyone involved.
Not always Possible
Don't forget, family comes first!
Always consider your families needs before others. Maybe your kids don't want guests all the time if at all.
Perhaps inviting one of their friends over will encourage them to relax and see the benefit in what you do.
Include your children in the planning and hosting, you may find them, more excited when they are more involved.
Here is my Shabbos Prep plan. I work around these tasks.
